In The Gut

all to do is listen to that innermost whisper
the stomach knows it, do abide
take note of how a churning it makes
awareness so opaque yet before you, it resides

brush aside the doubt, what lingers about
in corners, in doorways, in alleys near
wish for strength for what you face
no matter the challenge here

  1. Hmm, the mixing of grammar makes the poem hard to scan. The do’s of the opening don’t seem to relate to what is the issue, so when the poem picks up speed I kept going back to make sense of it. I’m not saying that poems should always “make sense” but the reader needs something to hold onto to get to the end. Is that fair?
