To Have Been There…

paris-cafe

at a boisterous row of tables
smoke and jazz mingle
with overbearing, overcooked fish
Hemingway, holding court, shouts:
“Garcon! Two more bottles of this ghastly swill!”
rapping the table with his sledgehammer fist
Gertrude Stein, to his right
places a composed hand on his forearm
stanching the boiling rage
bottles outnumber plates as
Man Ray, Daisy and F. Scott Fitzgerald
discuss everything and nothing
encouraged, Cole Porter wobbles over
finds the keys and stirs the room
painting it in a shade of blue
muting the party, however briefly
till a lively tune rallies a return
to the babbling roar
