governments quarrel, bicker
to war, to war, comes a cry
not of you, or I, but of those
protected by cannon fodder
for pride of country!
sacrificing women, men
for the safety of our citizens
on the other side of the world!

as a blood spattered child, alone
weeps for his parents

Why do we have to go down this narrow minded, hate-filled, route of murky, divisive politics of us vs them, right vs left, Canadian vs Canadian? And how it’s always politicians (of all shades), who cause these silly divisions?

Yes, we have differing opinions and beliefs (Is this not what it means to be human?), but it doesn’t give anyone the right to be hateful and put their interest above others.

For so long Canada was a beacon in the world because of our acceptance of multiculturalism and the rainbows of humanity. But the politicians came along and tore this to shreds, believing it was the right thing to do.

My Canada is not perfect, but she is a place of enchantment and beauty and acceptance and inclusion. Let us, together, keep her that way.

Yeah, some lowly politician is responsible for low oil prices run by greedy global conglomerates who use free trade zones to run roughshod over sovereign nations. Really, the companies care about whether they create jobs or not? Really? Give your head a shake. How those oil companies must be laughing at us in their grand scheme to create this ugly divisiveness of human hate. Shifting the blame to politicians who have no power over their business plans to rape the land until the last dollar.

That is the thing about human nature. We can choose to act one way or another.

This: disengaging your brain, falling for the rhetoric, remaining uneducated, seeing nothing but the surface and thus becoming an odious sheep, bleeding out your vile, shallow hate;

Or this: seeking the truth, looking behind the curtain to expose reality, sticking to the arduous ‘higher road’ in the face of fabricated deception, sticking to the “greater good” for you, your family, your community, your country.

Is this really what #rememberanceday is about? Is this the sum of the sacrifice our mothers and fathers?  Do you truly believe this is what they wanted for us?

Do you?

how I’ve seen her strive, fail, grow
leaders great, lesser, petty
tried their stamp, impress their will
yet she shined though it all
her people, from the spirit of
aboriginal humanity to the
immigrant seeking, hungering
a better, sheltered, certain life
her multi-coloured communities
match her noble, audacious bearing
my heart bursts with love in how
she stands a symbol for a better way
a greater world

god on earth
their pitched battles
masters and solders
bring civilization
at barbarous blade point
grandeur imperial crux
ingest, assimilate, consume
conquer mighty forests, rivers, wildlife
subjugate indigenous populations
decree, upon edict, upon proclamation
cracks find a portage in absolute power
resulting conflict, civil and world-wide
clear landscapes of cold-blooded monarchs
revolution at the ballot
atonement in common sense
skin-deep humanity
detached history
still, truth will out
clear hurdles

when you hear “election time”
what runs through your mind?
do the eyes roll
do you harken to the last time
entering a poll station
unsettled in mind, blindly angered
by those in charge
blind to your concerns
“out with them”, your refrain
yet fearful of change, the ballot
falling from your finger states:
status quo, “quite happy I am”

here, now, years on
happy in your choice?
has the chosen bureaucracy:
made advances in science
increased protection of our environment
strengthened human rights
especially for women and minorities
cared for a fair and ethical parliament
kept the country’s coffers ripe, replenished
kept the heath of citizens essential
looked to the future wanting:
to lessen the burden of our grandchildren
strived to find financial equality
kept Canada’s face and reputation as
a peacekeeper, a negotiator, a safe place for all
overall, have they strived, fought, given us
a greater Canada?

next time, ballot in hand
what choose you?

my dear Canada, our home on native land
how true our hearts are to this beautiful north
we in the west, look to the east in worry
as we graded, stand, for what is gloriously free
a toe dipped in Cape Spear, or Tofino
from tundra’d glory of Cape Columbia
to southern bijou of Middle Island

on my sleeve I bleed, my eyes weep
to hear fingers pointed, anger expressed
at each other, no matter recent
or forever denizen
or silly down-putting of those
successful in all points of the earth

prefer I do, the once peacekeeper’d stance
how it made me proud
of my country, my Canada

no matter, love you, I do

Let the hate and polarization begin as an election cycle starts… freakin’ tired of attack ads that insult my intelligence while telling me absolutely nothing except who I shouldn’t vote for.

Please, do your research, quit falling for a rhetoric and realize…

Such hate and polarization is one step away from the bloodied starting grounds of genocide. Think about it. Political leaders creating an inflamed, hateful environment, feeding on the hate that is already there…

Think! Ignore the media driven hate and think about your values, and vote for who YOU believe is right and not what you are TOLD is right.  How hard is it to look at both sides, walk in their shoes, understand it is multi-coloured, not black and white!

All I ask is that you think.  Go to the website Elections BC and register to vote.

Below is a list of BC political websites (in no particular order).  Stop by them and do you due diligence and make an informed vote!

BC Green Party
BC Liberals
BC Conservatives
BC Marijuana Party
etc…ad nauseum
